Nitrogen And Carbon Metabolism

RRP $629.99

This book results from a symposium on the theme of 'The Physiology and Biochemistry of Plant Productivity' which was held at the University of Calgary from July 14-18, 1980, and was jointly sponsored by the Canadian Society of Plant Physiologists and the International Association of Plant Physiologists. The subject matter of the book deals with various aspects of nitrogen and carbon metabolism, their interrelationships and interdependence. The topics covered in the chapters highlight various interesting and important lines of research that are in progress. There is no attempt to provide a comprehensive coverage of the basic physiological knowledge upon which this research depend- important references are to be found at the end of each chapter, however, and the reader will be able to pursue these as necessary. An introductory chapter by Dr. R.G.S. Bidwell (winner of the C.S.P.P. Gold Medal in 1979) considers some implications of plant physiological research and the aims and responsibilities of plant physiologists. In the next two chapters Drs. J. Rigaud and L.E. Schrader (with R.J. Thomas) elaborate on current research on nitrate metabolism and nitrogen fixation, and how an understanding of these phenomena might be usefully applied towards the manipulation of plants to improve productivity. A Tatter Of Scarlet

Deventer and I leaned on the parapet and watched the curious things which were happening in Aramon across the river. We were the biggest boys in the school and kept even the Seniors in awe, being "Les Anglais" to them-and so familiar with the "boxe"-though Deventer was an Irishman, and I, Angus Cawdor, a Scot of the Scots. We had explained the difference to them many times by arguments which may have temporarily persuaded some, but without in the least affecting the fixed French notion that all English-speaking people are of English race. Behind us circulated the usual menagerie-promenade of the "Grands," gabbling and whispering tremendous secrets in files of two and three.

Regulation Of Fixed-term Employment Contracts

RRP $433.99

In recent decades enterprises worldwide have reaped the advantages of hiring employees on a contractual fixed-term basis, thus derogating from their traditional participation in the social protection of workers and insulating themselves from legal liability for unjust dismissal. A broad spectrum of effectiveness has emerged in this development, as different countries have adopted varying measures to regulate the conditions under which fixedterm employment contracts are written, applied, and interpreted. This important book - which reprints papers submitted to the 10th Comparative Labour Law Seminar of the Japan Institute for Labour Policy and Training held in Tokyo on 8 and 9 March 2010 - details the regulatory approaches to fixed-term contracts in major industrial jurisdictions in Asia and Europe, providing an opportunity to explore normative directions for labour law and policy in the age of a diversified workforce. Nine knowledgeable and experienced contributors describe and analyse the legal status of fixed-term employment contracts (including relevant case law) in Australia, Britain, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Sweden, and Taiwan. Among the central issues examined are the following: - how four EU Member States apply the 1999 Directive on fixed-term work; - working conditions under fixed-term contracts; - legal consequences of violation of regulations on fixed-term employment contracts; - exceptions for certain groups of workers; - permissibility of derogation by collective agreements; - circumstances under which law on dismissal may be applied to an employer's refusal to renew a fixed-term contract; - equal treatment between workers on fixed-term contracts and those on open-ended contracts; - problems fixed-term workers may face in the country's social security system; and - regulation of reasons for concluding fixed-term contracts. Each author takes into account evaluations from scholars, policymakers, and stakeholders to his or her country's regulatory approach to fixed-term employment contracts, revealing an array of responses ranging from a view that such contracts enhance employment opportunities in society to advocating suppression of their use as inherently abusive and discriminatory. The combined effect of these nine essays is to greatly increase our awareness of the nature of fixed-term employment contracts, from their fundamental value as social policy instruments to their inextricable connection with the law of dismissal. The book sets the stage for deeper and more firmly grounded work that promises to elucidate the underlying pattern of a new employer-employee relationship emerging on a worldwide scale.

A Christmas Carol

"I have always thought of Christmas time . . . as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely."

So wrote Charles Dickens in A Christmas Carol, his tale of miserable miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a kind and caring benefactor after visits on one Christmas Eve from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Dickens's short novel is one of the most-loved works in the English language and the best-known celebration of the Yuletide season.

This special pocket edition of A Christmas Carol features an elegant bonded-leather binding, distinctive gilt edging, and decorative endpapers. It's the perfect gift for the Christmas season, and any other season.

About the Author

Charles Dickens is probably the greatest novelist England ever produced. His innate comic genius and shrewd depictions of Victorian life -- along with his memorable characters -- have made him beloved by readers the world over. In Dickens' books live some of the most repugnant villains in literature, as well as some of the most likeable (and unlikely) heroes.
